Substitute teachers are in high demand and needed on an ongoing basis.

Substitute requirements and process:

  • Fingerprint clearance

  • Completed application 

  • 3 letters of reference

  • Interview with a building principal

  • Salary ranges from $106.58-$137.87 per day based on education, certification and experience.

 *Selected applicants will be subject to a fingerprint-supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001. The applicant will also be responsible for the cost of the required fingerprinting.

Frequently Asked Questions on becoming a Substitute Teaching Credentials for New York State

What if I already hold a NYS Teaching Certificate?

If you already hold a NYS teaching certificate, you can be employed for any length of time in any number of school districts. However, in order to be employed on a long-term basis (more than 40 days in one school district, also known as a Leave-Replacement), you must hold the proper certification (or be working toward earning certification) in the specific field of study.

What if I do not hold a NYS teaching certificate but am working towards one?

If you do not possess a NYS teaching certificate but are working towards your certification (enrolled as a full-time student of more than six credits per year), you can be employed for any length of time in any number of school districts. However, in order to be employed on a long-term basis (more than 40 days in one school district, also known as a Leave-Replacement), you must hold the proper certification (or be working toward earning certification) in the specific field of study.

What if I do not hold NYS teaching certificate and am not working towards my certification?

If you do not possess a NYS teaching certificate and are not working towards one, you can be employed in any capacity within a number of school districts but cannot work more than 40 days within one school district within the same year.
