Happy New Year, MECS families!
The 2023-24 school year has kept us on our toes as the NY State Education Department has been busy with an aggressive agenda. One of the key regulatory changes signed by the Commissioner of Education last spring requires our District to make changes to our nickname/mascot “Warriors” by July 1, 2025.
There have been many districts that have already taken steps to make these changes and the local interest in our plans to change has grown in recent months. We are prepared to begin the process to adopt a new nickname/mascot and welcome participation from the community.
The process will be steered by the district’s Strategic Planning Committee. At this time, we are seeking interested faculty/staff, community members, alumni, and students to take part on this team. While the committee will be steering the process, we expect to follow a process that will allow the greater Morrisville-Eaton community to contribute to a list of mascot/nickname considerations.
By March, our current plan is to have the student body (grade levels to be determined) cast votes on their favorites. In March, we expect that the Board of Education will receive the comprehensive list of submitted ideas and the data collected from the student body. We anticipate that in April, the Board of Education will adopt the new nickname/mascot. In May and June, logo prototypes may be submitted for consideration. In June, the student body will cast votes on their favorite artwork followed by a Board adoption of the prototype. If necessary, a graphic designer will work with the prototype to enhance the professional quality and develop it into the proper graphics format.
While the noted timeline illustrates the current vision of our process to transition to our new nickname/logo/mascot, it is expected that discussions with new participants on our Strategic Planning Committee may lead to a different plan and/or recommendations. At this time, we expect to transition to the new nickname/mascot/logo on July 1, 2024.
