At around 7:30 PM on March 1st, the NYS Health Department issued new guidance to school districts across the state related to the mask-optional plans set to begin on March 2nd. The state's document and a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) can be found in the links below:
As noted in Sunday evenings message from the District, masks will be optional for students and staff effective March 2nd. The information captured in the guidance will be used to make the formal adjustments within our Reopening Plan over the next few days.
COVID-19 tests will continue to be available at our main offices. Parents may call or stop in during business hours to pick one up. We also have supplies of different types of disposable face masks for any child/faculty member in need. Those can be accessed in the main offices too.
All of us at MECS appreciate the support and protocol adherence over the last two years. The elimination of the state-wide universal mask mandate in schools will be met with relief by some, and concern and apprehension by others. We are hopeful that the end of the mask mandate is a big step toward a return to normalcy and community unification.
This is an opportunity for our entire community to reflect on the differing beliefs and opinions of our friends and neighbors. It is imperative that those making the personal choice to wear a mask or not wear a mask, when it is not mandated, are not stigmatized, bullied, or made to feel uncomfortable.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our school programs and operations. I am proud of the efforts of our faculty, staff, and students who have accomplished more during the last 24 months, under painful conditions, than I could have imagined was possible. #WarriorStrong
